How to be Comfortable in Front of the Camera
One of the most common questions I get asked is how I became so photogenic and comfortable in front of the camera. Like most things, I typically say it just took time and practice, but I’ve come up with a few ideas I believed helped me through the years.
Do your research
Trying to smile on command or getting the perfect Instagram picture can be a challenge, especially if you’re working with somebody you don’t know too well. So, one thing I like to do before any photo shoot is look up inspiration.
I typically go to Instagram or Pinterest to get ideas. I first look up what type of photo shoot I want to have starting with a simple idea and dive in deeper from there. I keep Pinterest boards full of fun photo shoot ideas as well as save Instagram posts that I love so I can later look back on them for inspiration! This helps a lot for not only setting up the photo shoots but also looking at poses and prop ideas.
A few people I love to follow on Instagram and get inspiration from are, Leah Marie of @Styleandstems, @JaclynMisch, Ashley Bell of @Tallblondebell and @TherealKristenmarie.
Laugh a lot
When working with a new photographer try getting to know them during the shoot. This will help that awkward feeling of having to pose and smile in front of a stranger go away. Also, as corny as it sounds try to think of a funny story or joke and tell it to the photographer to get you both laughing. Capturing those authentic laughing smiles always turn out as great shots.
Use props
This is a simple trick that can help you feel less pressure because you’re sharing the spotlight with a prop! You can use a clothing item like a hat or fun skirt to twirl. I wrote all about how to style a wide brim hats here, if you’re looking for inspiration. Or grab some type of food or drink to bring more color into the photo. Also, adding motion to your picture while using a prop can really help loosen you up and bring your photos to life.
Don’t be too critical
During your shoot ask to look at the photos. This always helps me notice if my hair is being funny with the wind or my hands are too stiff. However, if you look at the photos and feel they’re all awkward and stiff, take a moment, breathe and loosen up. The number one thing I suggest is making sure you have good posture. Roll those shoulders back and hold your head up high, it’ll instantly transform those photos!
Get out of your comfort zone
Don’t be afraid to be goofy. Photographers love when you change it up. Look directly at the camera for some shots and then away. Try making your self laugh and then have a serious expression. Mix up poses from sitting to standing to walking. It’s okay if you don’t like all of the photos, I never do. You’re just looking to get a few great shots!
Lastly, it just takes time and practice so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t instantly feel more comfortable in front of the camera. As long as you keep trying, it’s going to get easier.
